He's Back, Haven't You Heard?

"The Unexpected Return of Mr. Meek" (TUROMM) is a music documentary offering a fresh, entirely updated look at the extraordinary life and musical legacy of 1960s producer Joe Meek. Meek, who collaborated with David Bowie, Jimmy Page, Richie Blackmore, Tom Jones, Rod Stewart, Marc Bolan, and many others, is widely credited as having shaped the sound of modern music.
Often called the "British Phil Spector" and known for the hit "Telstar," Joe was a pioneer in modern music recording. He was a flamboyant, mercurial genius with a complex and tortured personality. A gay man at a time when homosexuality was illegal, Meek was a visionary who invented a whole range of new recording techniques to share his musical ideas. He also struggled with paranoia and mental turmoil, leading a rollercoaster life in the often seedy and violent 1960s London pop scene.
The film features interviews with legendary artists who worked with Joe, and who reveal how Meek helped shape and launch their stellar careers.
Renowned producers, including Trevor Horn CBE (Buggles, Ivor Novello Award winner) and Sylvia Massey (Prince, Red Hot Chilli Peppers) will talk about Joe’s innovation and how it remains vitally relevant today.
In a unique blend of past and present, the project will bring contemporary music stars into the studio to create new songs using unreleased Joe Meek instrumentals.
The film will delve into the dark underbelly of 1960s London, explore why Joe Meek remains an enduring cult figure, and examine the challenges of being a criminalised homosexual during that era. It will highlight the therapeutic role of music for those struggling with mental health issues and showcase Joe Meek's lasting influence on the music industry. Finally, it will share exclusive new evidence that casts a wholly new light on the tragedy of his final days.
"The Unexpected Return of Mr. Meek" promises to be an exhilarating, moving, and inspiring experience for Joe Meek fans everywhere.
