"The Unexpected Return of Mr. Meek" (TUROMM) is a music documentary planned for global cinema release in 2025.This feature-length production dives into the extraordinary life and musical legacy of rock and pop producer Joe Meek.
Inventing a bewildering range of revolutionary recording techniques, Joe crafted the sound of modern music, whilst also struggling with his homosexuality - and the social attitudes of his time. Incredible as it sounds today, being gay was illegal in “Swinging Sixties” London, and Joe lived in constant fear of being outed, blackmail or even violence.
Working with David Bowie, Jimmy Page, Richie Blackmore, Tom Jones, Rod Stewart, Marc Bolan, and many more, Joe Meek earned a worldwide reputation as “The British Phil Spector”. His life was cut short aged just 37, in an apparent murder/suicide tragedy.
Joe was a flamboyant, mercurial character - given to frequent fits of rage, doing business with a shotgun, obsessed with spiritualism and constantly pushing back the boundaries of music recording through constant experimentation in his ramshackle home studio above a leather goods shop in North London.
Throughout the film, legendary artists share how Joe Meek shaped their stellar careers, alongside renowned producers and industry players such as Trevor Horn CBE (Buggles, Ivor Novello Award winner) and Sylvia Massey (Prince, Red Hot Chilli Peppers).
In a unique past-meets-present creative experience, contemporary music stars will create new songs using never-released Joe Meek instrumentals.
The film will expose the dark underbelly of 1960s London, explore Joe's enduring cult status, and reveal the challenges of being a criminalised homosexual during that era. It will also highlight music's therapeutic importance for those struggling with mental health issues, like Joe, and his lasting influence on the world.
The Unexpected Return of Mr. Meek will be an exhilarating, moving, and inspiring experience for anyone who feels like an outsider.
