There cannot be a music producer alive today who is not aware of the immense legacy of Joe Meek - the “British Phil Spector”, author of Telstar, mercurial genius who invented sampling, close-miking, varispeed and innumerable other techniques in his ramshackle home studio in London.
"The Unexpected Return Of Mr Meek", planned for release in 2025, dives into Joe’s extraordinary life and musical legacy, witnessing him craft the sound of modern music - working with David Bowie, Jimmy Page,, Tom Jones, Petula Clark, Rod Stewart, Marc Bolan and many, many more.
The legendary Tea Chest Tapes- thousands of hours of unreleased stems and instrumentals - will be centre stage - as we film contemporary music stars in studio and on stage - creating and performing brand new music using material recorded by Joe in the 1960s.
Throughout the film we will hear from these legendary artists about how Joe Meek helped shape and launch their stellar career - alongside numerous renowned producers and industry players - such as Sylvia Massey (Prince, Red Hot Chilli Peppers) and Trevor Horn CBE (Buggles, Ivor Novello Award).
In a unique past-meets-present creative experience, the project will bring contemporary music stars into the studio to create brand new songs using never-released Joe Meek instrumentals.
We’ll also be re-examining Joe’s tragic death aged just 37 - including new revelations that challenge all the conventional theories about the apparent murder/suicide that claimed his life.
The film will expose the dark underbelly of London during the swinging 60s, why Joe has remained such an enduring cult figure within the music industry, what it was like to be a criminalised homosexual at that time, how music is such an important therapy for those struggling like Joe with mental health issues and will explore the continued influence Joe has on the world he left behind.
The Unexpected Return of Mr. Meek will be an exhilarating, moving and inspiring experience for music lovers worldwide..
